A taste of Leadership Mindset

Most books about leadership start with a list of things leaders should do. This one starts somewhere else, because doing the right thing is rarely the actual problem. Most people who fail as leaders are not lazy, uninformed, or unwilling to work hard. They are, in a very specific and fixable sense, thinking poorly about the situation in front of them.

That claim probably sounds strange at first. It is worth sitting with anyway. This book is not a collection of leadership tips, and it will not ask you to memorize a list of traits that famous executives supposedly share. Instead, it will ask you to look closely at something you already do every day without noticing: the thinking that happens before you act.

Three key ideas from Book 1

  1. Thinking comes before acting

Most leadership problems start in the thinking that happens before anyone acts.

  2. Leadership does not need a title

Some of the clearest leadership thinking happens in people with no formal authority.

  3. Seven habits, seven frameworks

Each chapter of Book 1 builds one thinking habit with its own tool.
